A collaboration between QMUL, the RCGP NEL Faculty, NHS East London Health and Care Partnership, NHS North Central London Partners and NEL GP Health Equity Leads .

18 months after Deep End GP Founder Graham Watts’ visit to QMUL GP Education Day we mark the 50th Anniversary of the Inverse Care Law we find ourselves in the midst of the Covid-19 story. Stark health equalities have been amplified by the pandemic in the communities in which we practice and teach.

Liliana Risi, Provost RCGP NEL Faculty says: ‘Our human fabric is bound up with stories handed down over centuries, that give us courage to connect in order to move forwards. In our areas where the environment is unfair, patients consult more, often feel less enabled after consultations and doctors are left more stressed. We have been worst affected by Covid-19 and have an urgent need now, in the words of John Berger, to ‘restore hope, like contraband, passed from hand-to-hand story to story’.

Our Health Equity Festival and Celebration is open access for anyone in primary care, students, trainees, acute sector consultants, link workers community organisations.

WORKSHOP DESCRIPTIONS (CBME SPRING EDUCATION EVENT )

Year 1: Reviewing Virtual MedSoc – Lucy Langford

This workshop is an opportunity to review the virtual MedSoc placement so far. Please bring your successes and challenges to discuss and share our learning and best practice ideas. We will briefly recap on the virtual primary care (VPC) resource and consider the future of virtual MedSoc.

General Practice 2 (GP2): Where do we go from here? – Maria Hayfron-Benjamin

We need your help to plan our placements for next academic year. GP2 has changed from 12 x half days and has been delivered online this year. This workshop will be an opportunity to discuss the feedback we have received from tutors and students, share what has worked well, what has been challenging and what we need to change for next academic year. This workshop will be of interest to tutors who have delivered GP2, or its predecessor - Extending Patient Contact. If you are interested in taking on year 2 students in the future please come along to find out more.

General Practice 3 (GP3): Successes, Challenges and the Role of Remote Technologies - Vidya Mistry & Louise Younie

We will review the successes and challenges for the GP3 course including remote patient encounters and virtual tutorials. Through breakouts, jamboard and menti we will share best educational practice and potential improvements to GP3 curriculum and communications.

Health Inequality in Year 4 – Dev Gadhvi & Rohini Sabherwal

The Year 4 team are introducing a focus on Health Inequality as we progress towards a significant shift of the new curriculum. We are interested in sharing our ideas of how we can incorporate this into Year 4 specialty teaching. We recognise that tutors have vast experiences in this already and we are keen to take this opportunity to co-construct our plans.

This workshop will include opportunities to discuss Deep End working and on-going challenges of Health Inequality in our local area and how we can address this in relation to Year 4 teaching.

Year 5 GP Assistantship: ‘Sharing experiences and feeding back’ – Meera Sood & Siobhan Cooke

As the GP Assistantship nears the end for this academic year, we invite our GP Tutors to come together and share their experiences of teaching and supporting students through the pandemic. This space will be a chance to discuss both positive and negative aspects that have arisen through this difficult year. We are happy to talk through student cases or situations and discuss next steps for the Assistantship.

PA: Building a physician associate community in Primary Care – Dr Padma Wignesvaran

Our fifth cohort of PA students have now started. A number of our graduates are working in primary care locally and, with support from the GPs at their practices, are starting to supervise PA students where they work.

This workshop will focus on supporting PA students to develop the skills they will need to work in primary care and on harnessing the specialist skills of PAs working locally in this endeavour, it will be of interest to PAs and GPs who are interested in hosting PA students or practices who want to find out more about the role of the PA in primary care.

‘Connecting Practice’: GP tutor support group sessions – Lucy Marks MBE

The sessions that we have been running provide a space for GP tutors to think about the emotional lives of the medical students and the effect this has on them. We would like to feedback to you the themes that have been coming up, and some great examples of innovation and good practice that participants have shared.

We are planning on new ways of communicating about this work and wanted to hear your views about what you might find most helpful.
